Uriah James Davis lived at Court House Painswick and in November 1880 issued a propectus for his publication to be issued in five parts where “the Geology, Flora, Fauna and Manufacture will recieve particular attention”, It promised “Much that has never been published will be contained within these ‘Notes'”.

In the event, only the first part (March 1881) was ever published, despite an impressive list of subscibers. Chapters include the geology, by E. Witchell – the flora, by G. S. Boulger and the fauna. Appendix I gives the Earl of Shrewsbury’s 15th century concessions recarding the customs of the manor of Painswick and Appendix II lists the customs of the manor as set out in a legal case before 1803. There are 12 plates.
