Introduction

Between 1965 and 1982, the Extra-Mural Studies Department of the University of Bristol arranged a series of evening classes at what is now Gloucestershire Archives, where class members studied topics of their choosing. The class met for typically 24 evenings of which three or four were taken up with lectures or discussions. In some cases the students pursued their studies outside Gloucestershire Archives – at the Public Record Office (now The National Archives), the Gloucestershire Collection which was then housed at Gloucester City Library, among private archives and in field-work.

The then County Archivist, Brian S. Smith acted as tutor for the majority of the seasons and encouraged the students to write up the results of their studies, which he edited for publication in this series. In some cases, it was the first time that the student had carried out detailed historical research.

However under the expert tutelage, many of the accounts still serve as a useful introduction to their topic, more than 40 years on from publication. In a number of cases, the students went on to author books on the topics that they started in the classes.

The first of these publications was entitled Gloucestershire in the 18th Century (1966) and the 13 subsequent issues form the series Gloucestershire Historical Studies (1967-1982).
