The ‘parish’ contents of two bound volumes of Victorian parish magazines have been digitised and made available to download using the links below.
Each volume contains twelve editions of the magazine (January to December). Typically, each edition contains between 7 and 11 pages of parish news plus a 24 page syndicated ‘supplement’ containing ‘Sunday reading’ ecclesiastical texts, articles on historical figures, poetry and sermons. The latter was produced by W Wells Gardner of London and no doubt was included in parish magazines throughout the land.
The news from each parish is not restricted solely to church matters and includes events relating to the parish, which are unlikely to have been recorded elsewhere. This followed by extracts from baptism, marriage, and burial registers for the parish.
A few pages were missing from each of the volumes and a note to this effect has been included in the relevant editions.
